Midwest NNME Partner Convening

Building Momentum for Midwest Manufacturing and Microelectronics

EXCELERATE-ME: Preparing the Midwest for Semiconductor Workforce Growth

On April 9, 2026, Lorain County Community College, Columbus State Community College, Ivy Tech Community College, The Ohio State University, and the Midwest Microelectronics Consortium convened more than 65 partners from industry, education, and workforce development across seven states. Participants represented Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—including five of the seven state manufacturing associations in the Midwest.

This multistate convening marked an important milestone. The seeds have been planted, and there is strong, urgent interest across the region to ensure the Midwest is positioned to meet the moment and support the rapid growth of the nation’s semiconductor industry. The session focused on the critical work needed to advance the semiconductor ecosystem in the Midwest, with specific attention to workforce readiness and regional alignment.

The convening supports a pending proposal to the SEMI Foundation’s National Network for Microelectronics Education (NNME). Last fall, the SEMI Foundation issued a request for proposals inviting organizations to host regional nodes under the national NNME Hub. In response, a proposal for a seven‑state Midwest Regional Node was submitted on December 21.

The proposal is co‑led by Lorain County Community College on behalf of Ohio TechNet, together with The Ohio State University, Columbus State Community College, Ivy Tech Community College, and the Midwest Microelectronics Consortium (MMEC). Strategic partners include the Ohio Manufacturers’ Association, the Ohio Workforce Association, and others. With an initial one‑year, $5 million investment across Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Kentucky, and Wisconsin, the initiative is designed to deliver rapid and sustainable impact in meeting industry talent needs. More than 120 partners are engaged in this initial effort, with continued growth anticipated.

As the nation and region await the SEMI Foundation’s announcement, partners remain aligned around the importance of this work—regardless of which organization is named the lead node. This convening was held to highlight progress to date, prepare for the anticipated EXCELERATE‑ME Midwest Regional Node Year 1 strategy and priorities, share insights from manufacturing and semiconductor industry leaders, and foster discussion on strengthening regional collaboration to address critical workforce needs. Participants also explored opportunities for continued collaboration, information sharing, and future funding strategies.

As momentum continues to build, partners are encouraged to stay engaged and help shape next steps, including providing input on potential Regional Innovation Investments.
